History of Marne

The history of Marne's factories

The Marne has a rich history. It started more than a century ago in the village of Molenrij near Kloosterburen, where three gentlemen decided to give the local economy a boost by setting up a mustard factory. In addition to employment, the factory also provided a sales channel for mustard seed from regional farmers.

The small mustard factory soon succeeded in its goal, but not only in the area around Molenrij (near Kloosterburen). Mustard was also known in the surrounding area for its quality and affordable price. This led to growth and in 1926 it was decided to move the factory to Groningen. Due to the logistics options by water and road, the company grew steadily in the decades that followed. Within no time, De Marne mustard was eaten throughout the Netherlands and sales channels beyond national borders were sought.

Today, De Marne products can be found all over the world. In Africa, mustard is an affordable flavor enhancer, in Asian countries it is a tasty culinary addition. De Marne is still located in the city of Groningen. In the building on the Van Starkenborgh Canal, the mustard is ground, packaged and sent to many sales channels in the Netherlands and far beyond every day, with an eye for craftsmanship and quality. Due to increasing international demand and with the ambition to grow further in the coming years, the first pile was driven in April 2017 for the expansion of the building with a new logistics hall. This creates more space in the existing hall to continue the craft within modern production techniques. The new warehouse was officially opened on July 6, 2018. De Marne can boast a rich history and confidently looks forward to a successful future.
